Rapid Flood Damage Assessment in Maharashtra

The 2024 monsoon floods in Maharashtra devastated thousands of hectares of agricultural land, leaving farmers struggling and the government facing an immense challenge in loss assessment and compensation disbursement. Agrivision4u was deployed to execute a rapid damage assessment using advanced spatial technologies.

The Challenge

Traditional Crop Cutting Experiments (CCEs) and manual field surveys would have taken months to complete across the 5 affected districts. The delay in processing claims would have severely impacted the financial stability of over 10,000 farmers.

Our Approach

We deployed a hybrid remote sensing approach:

  • Satellite Analytics: Used Sentinel-1 (SAR) imagery, which penetrates cloud cover, to map flood inundation extents within 48 hours of the event.
  • Drone Surveys: Deployed a fleet of fixed-wing and quadcopter drones equipped with multispectral cameras to capture high-resolution ($<$5cm GSD) imagery of affected zones.
  • AI Classification: Our proprietary machine learning models classified crop health and damage severity by comparing pre-flood and post-flood vegetation indices (NDVI/EVI).

  • The Results

The entire assessment covering 50,000 hectares was completed in just 15 days, achieving a ground-truthed accuracy of 96%. This expedited analysis allowed the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to disburse ₹500 Cr in compensation months earlier than usual, providing critical relief to the farming community.
